Abstract

This study aims to explore students' understanding of utilizing the TikTok social media platform as a learning medium to enhance digital literacy at SMP Negeri 7 Makassar. Given the rapid advancement of technology, digital literacy has become an essential skill that students must possess to face the challenges of the digital era. TikTok, as one of the most popular social media platforms among teenagers, has the potential to be used in an educational context, particularly through its short and interactive video features. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation of students who used TikTok as a learning medium. The findings reveal that the majority of students are able to effectively utilize TikTok to improve their digital literacy. They not only use TikTok to creatively understand learning materials but also develop critical thinking skills to filter the information they receive. However, several challenges remain, such as limited internet access and distractions from irrelevant content. Based on these findings, the researcher suggests that schools and teachers take a more active role in providing guidance and supervision in the use of social media for learning, as well as strengthening the technological infrastructure to support it.
